The federal government wants to help the state of SC jam cell phone signals that come from state prisons. Ok. If they are aware that there are cell phone signals coming from these places, why do they just not conduct a search or more specifically pinpoint the source and punish the offender? Why do something that is federally illegal in the first place? While I understand that it is against the rules for inmates to have cell phones and even consider them contraband, is it not a little hypocritical to tell the inmates that even if they are able to obtain a cell phone and use it inside the prison, we are going to break a federal law to ensure that you do not enjoy the priviledge of using it? I would think so. I know that some of these inmates would use the phones to commit crimes or aid someone in committing a crime but it just doesnt make sense. Many of the inmates in prisons have nothing better to do than to read and when they catch wind that the government is breaking the law just to keep them from doing something, they are going to find marvellous ways to circumvent the procedure and sue the government. It will boil down to the fact that "so what, they are taking away my rights by scrambling or intercepting my cell phone usage and that is against federal law, I am going to sue them even though I am not supposed to have the cell phone in the first place." Boy, that is a great way to waste even more of the taxpayers money, is it not?
